Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer (PDPA)

 

PDPA is a powerful tool to study sprays. Our Artium PDPA is a self contained system without the need for optical alignment. It can measure droplet diameter from 0.5 to 93 microns. It also uses solid state laser which is highly reliable and durable.

Optical Tweezers (coming soon!)

 

We use this customized optical tweezers to introduce non-intrusive perturbations to the liquid micro jet. We plan to integrate a high power, high frequency laser diode that applies ~100 pN force to the liquid jet. The laser diode can be modulated to MHz with arbituray waveform. The optical configuration also allows us to focus the laser spot and image the jet at the same time.

3D Rapid Prototyping

 

Precision CNC: this customized high precision CNC system has 1 micron resolution and 150cmx150cmx60cm working envelope. Tools collection includes micro drills of 25 microns and micro endmills of 50 microns in diameter. The tools are powered by an NSK spindle with speed up to 25,000 RPM.

 

Standard CNC: with 25 micron resolution for routine machining

 

3D Printer: a MakerBot 3D printer retrofited with electrospray head and microscope for simple experiment and demonstration


CNC Laser Engraver: powered by 40W CW CO2 laser for large area patterning and cut-out.

Phenom Desktop SEM

 

This desktop scanning electron microscope (SEM) provides in-house capability of sample characterization. Main features include:
            - Up to 24,000x magnification and 30nm resolution
            - Sample loading to SEM image under 30 seconds
            - Long life and high-brightness source (CeB6)
            - Touch screen and rotary knob controls

            - Imager resolution 2048x2048 pixels
 


 

GPU Supercomputer

 

Our GPU Supercomputer is equipped with four RV870, the most powerful mono-GPU (as of July 2010). In total, our PSC has 6400 streaming units reaching theoretical peak speed of 10 Tera FLOPs, which is faster than ASCI Red (the fastest Super Computer  in 2000). We run codes written in OpenCL.

We have three state-of-the-art fume hoods with advanced flow control for various types of material processing. The hoods are equiped with spin coater, hot plates, motorized x-y-z stages, precision blance, and precision syringe pumps.
